Emily has just finished her 6th semester of Kindermusik. Emily began Kindermusik when she was 5 months old and continued until now (3 years and 9 months). We only missed one semester due to schedule conflicts although we were enrolled in another music class at that time.
I had been familiar with Kindermusik for many years as a preschool teacher but I was first exposed as a mom when Emily was a few months old. We started attending a Baby and Me group at Women's Hospital when Emily was about two weeks old. This was a wonderful group where we met lots of fabulous moms and babies, many of who we are still friends with today. Each week they had different guests and speakers talking about different topics related to motherhood and babies. One week a local Kindermusik instructor, Julie Davidson, came to do a sample class with us. I had already heard about Julie and how she was one of best Kindermusik instructors in our area and we really enjoyed the demo class so Jeff and I decided to sign Emily up for the Spring semester starting in January of 2008.
The Kindermusik class was about 30 minutes from our house so it was quite a drive but luckily my baby did better driving in the car than she did sometimes in other situations so it was a good fit for us. This class immediately became something we looked forward to each week. As a new mom, Kindermusik was such a blessing in my life and a great way to reconnect with people we already knew and to meet new friends.
One of the reasons we chose to do Kindermusik with Emily is that research shows that music helps the brain make connections and develop in numerous ways. Music has been shown to improve reading and math skills. Kindermusik, and other similar programs, expose children to many types of music and musical concepts. Kindermusik activities help children develop social skills, listening skills and cognitive skills. It's also a lot of fun! I naturally sang a lot with Emily but Kindermusik gave me a lot of things to do with Emily at home that I never would have thought of. It exposed both of us to so many different types of music and songs. Emily was able to explore a variety of musical instruments as well. Each semester we had music Cds, books and instruments to take home.
We won't be doing Kindermusik next year because our schedule is so full. Emily will be going to preschool, childcare at church and Little Gym. Because this will be Emily's last year before Kindergarten I have decided to make sure we have one day a week without anything scheduled. We will miss it so much! Who knows, maybe we'll take more classes later down the road.
Each May, Ms. Julie has a Family Night. It is a potluck dinner and then each age group performs a few songs for everyone. We attended this year for the first time. We had never been to one before because we live so far away and it was so late in the day but we decided to go this year. It was a lot of fun.
As we watched the babies do their songs at Family Night tears came to my eyes. Not so long ago, Emily was a baby doing those same songs in Kindermusik.
Look at how she has grown!!!
